You’ve Got Questions - We’ve Got Answers

Why use an estimator / consultant

When you are spending a lot of money on your most valuable asset it makes a lot of sense to get it right the first time. Getting detailed quotes is not always easy, knowing the questions to ask is not easy. Residential construction is often haphazard and chaotic, With Buildbox as your estimating consultant, you will know the detailed costs and the questions to ask. With Buildbox on your team, You're in Control.

Do you consult on smaller jobs?

Our services are usually used for jobs between $300k and above.  However you might be looking to do some improvements for say $50k to $150k and have no plans and want to know whether your budget is realistic. Our 'Just starting out' service is perfect for this and we are happy to come out and have a realistic discussion with you for our standard call out fee that starts at $330. Call us to discuss!

Do you provide a Bill of Quantities?

Yes providing there is sufficient construction detail. If you only have concept plans we will discuss other ways to develop a realistic estimate.

Our architect said they can do a costing, is that better?

Most architects are pretty good at costing jobs, they are in the building industry every single day so they should be! An estimator will probably give you a very detailed estimate that is objective, measures everything, makes real world about supply and demand, and will note all inclusions and exclusions. Buildbox will give you that peace of mind you are on the right track and making the right decisions.

Why are builders' quotes so different?

In our experience the common problems are:
1. There is no standard industry costing format, so every builder has their own way of presenting costs.
2. Builders are time poor, so mistakes are common, especially when they're doing free costings and quotes.
3. Unrealistic allowances are stated for poorly specified construction areas - if you don't know exactly what you want in your kitchen, the builder can't put an accurate cost on it.
4. Customers don't know the right questions to ask. (You don't know, what you you don't know). For example, why are some windows $50,000 for the whole house while others are $120,000?
5. Preliminaries (such as insurances, scaffolding and other set-up costs) and overheads are often underestimated.

How much does it cost?

How much it costs depends on how much information and help you feel you need. We charge an initial fee of $300 plus GST to come to your home and discuss your needs. If you like what you hear then we will provide you with a quotation for the service that suits you best. We always know our customers will learn valuable information from our first meeting.
